MY sister won’t let me into her life. She has no money, isn’t working and her latest boyfriend is a nightmare.

Yet whenever I go round to support her, she virtually slams the door in my face. In the past few weeks I’ve offered food, cash and practical help. Why is she shooting herself in the foot when all I want to do is help?

JANE SAYS: Your sister is an adult and an individual. If she really isn’t interested in your help then back off and respect her position.

She knows where you are and what you’re prepared to do for her, so she can come to you in future if she wants to.

At the moment I get the impression that you’re annoying her more than anything else. Could it be that you’re coming across as patronising or even slightly superior or smug?
