FAN-TASTIC MEMORIES

- By IAN MURTAGH

HARRY MAGUIRE finds himself in the minority within England’s 23-man World Cup squad – he is the one who enjoyed Euro 2016.

The fact he headed to France as a fan rather than a player might have something to do with it.

He wasn’t in Nice to witness England’s exit against Iceland but the Leicester ace doesn’t talk too much about his experiences two years ago with the five survivors from the squad who are in Russia with him.

“It was actually a great few days,” the central defender (below) said.

“My friends were already out there and I had a few days spare that summer, so I thought there’s nothing better than to go out there, sample the atmosphere and see the passion of the fans.

“I would definitely do it again.”

That’s something Maguire will have to put on hold as he is now a key member of boss Gareth Southgate’s three-man defence.

He is expected to start against Tunisia on Monday having impressed the England manager with his strength, composure in possession and reading of the game.

And you can add to that a first-hand knowledge of what the travelling fans expect from those wearing the Three Lions.

Maguire said: “I did the third game against Slovakia. It wasn’t the greatest of games but the result took them through to the knockout stages of the World Cup so the atmosphere was still good around the stadium and everyone was buzzing.”

Two of Maguire’s brothers – Joe and Laurence – plus several of those same mates will be in Russia supporting him along with most of his family.

And the former Hull City man is determined to repay their loyalty, knowing the sacrifices many of them have made in order to be there.

“I’m totally aware,” he said.

“It’s a trip which costs a lot of money and I realise what it means to everyone.

“So we’ll give everything we can to be a success.”
