HAGUE: TIME TO LEGALISE DOPE

Cannabis call slammed

WILLIAM Hague was slapped down by the Government yesterday after he called for cannabis to be legalised.

The former Tory leader accused his party of being “deluded” to think weed can be “driven off the streets”.

He said ordering the police to win the war on cannabis was futile.

Lord Hague said: “Issuing orders to defeat cannabis use is about as up-to-date and relevant as asking the Army to recover the Empire.

“As far as cannabis is concerned, any war has been comprehensively and irreversibly lost.

“The idea that the drug can be driven off the streets and out of people’s lives by the state is nothing short of deluded.”

His calls were quashed by Sajid Javid as he ruled out legalising the drug for recreational use.

The Home Secretary has ordered a review of marijuana regulation, but only for medical use.

He told the House of Commons he had been moved by the plight of young children such as Billy Caldwell, from Northern Ireland.

The 12-year-old ended up in hospital after officials took away his epilepsy medication because it contains the illegal drug.

He said: “I will do everything in my power to make sure these children get access to the best medical treatment.” Six-year-old Alfie Dingley’s mum turned to cannabis oil when conventional steroid treatment made the epilepsy sufferer become violent.

Hannah Deacon, of Kenilworth, Warks, had to buy the drug in the Netherlands – but has now been granted a licence to treat Alfie in the UK.

She said he had gone from 300 or more seizures a month to just one.
