Guineas’ winners showdown

- By PATRICK WEAVER

THREE Classic winners go head to head in the race of the day for three-year-old fillies over a mile.

The first of the trio to win was

BILLESDON BROOK (4.20).

Richard Hannon’s filly was 66-1 when she beat the subsequent French Oaks winner, Laurens, at Newmarket in the 1,000 Guineas.

A week later Teppal gave trainer David Simcock his first Classic win in France, beating Coeur De Beaute, Wind Chimes and Capla Temptress. Less than half a length separated the first four, but Teppal won in spite of not getting the run of the race.

The last of the Guineas was the one at the Curragh at the end of May.

Alpha Centauri had two lengths in hand of Could It Be Love and Happily, with Clemmie back in ninth.

Aidan O’Brien trains the two placed fillies but has left them at home, as he feels Clemmie has the best chance this afternoon.

It is impossible to get excited by the others and, fingers crossed, Billesdon Brook will come out on top. She is a best-price 13-2 with Betway.
