FEAR OF ALLIGATOR FALL

- JAMES Bay

MARTIN Gore will never forget the time he almost went down in rock & roll’s hall of deaths.

The Depeche Mode singer-songwriter revealed how his crazy ways almost got him killed.

Still drunk after a wild night out in New Orleans, the band decided to go on a tour of the swamps.

Keyboardist Peter Gordeno recalled: “We were going down this swamp and obviously all the alligators are around the boat and everything. I was just chatting to

loves playing festivals – because it’s a chance to make friends.

He told me: “When I toured my first record, I was always at the same festivals as the American band The War On Drugs. Eventually, we became really good friends.

“It’s starting to be the same this festival season.

“It’s too early to have made any proper mates yet, but I’m sure it’ll happen by the end of the summer.” Martin and I looked away and by the time I looked back he’d sort of stood up and his eyes were kind of rolling around in his head a little bit.

“He then had what I later found out was a seizure.

“He fell to the floor and started writhing around and luckily there was a Depeche Mode fan who was there who was like a marine or something and had medical training. He jumped over, got Martin on his side and he came through it.

“He could have fallen backwards into a swamp full of alligators, which would have been a spectacular rock and roll death.”

The singer is grateful he got his drinking out of the way before smartphones could capture him in compromising moments, and especially when staying in hotels.

Peter shared: “I remember there’s a hotel in London that I know Martin stayed at. The next time I went into this hotel I noticed a no-nudity policy.

“It might have nothing to do with him, it could be a coincidence, I’m just putting it out there.”

Meanwhile, the band is now re-releasing all the singles as vinyl boxsets.
