Chester blast for winners
CHRIS CHESTER saw Wakefield boost their Super 8s chances but blasted them for a slipshod second-half performance.
Trinity notched four tries in the opening period to lead 22-0 but then conceded four to their bottom-of-thetable visitors after the interval.
Chester, whose side are now four points clear of Catalans in ninth, said: “I let the players know they need to be a lot more ruthless defensively.
“We allowed Widnes to score too many easy tries. We came up with some poor individual decisions and some pretty poor contact.
“The lads are disappointed and deflated at the end but we got the two points and that’s all we wanted.”
Chester also claimed he’s not looking over his shoulder at the chasing teams below, including champions Leeds and Huddersfield.
He added: “We are two points off Hull in fifth and that’s where we’re looking.”
Tom Johnston, Ben Jones-Bishop, Bill Tupou, and Ryan Hampshire scored for Trinity in the first half with James Batchelor kicking three goals. Tupou and Reece Lyne added further tries after the break along with Batchelor and Tinirau Arona.
Stefan Marsh, Danny Walker, Alex Gerrard and Ryan Ince scored Widnes’ tries – but they still slipped to an 11th league defeat in a row.
Francis Cummins, still to win since replacing Denis Betts as interim coach, said: “Wakefield were good but we gave them some leg-ups.”
