JURY OUT ON JONES

-

ENGLAND rugby chairman Andy Cosslett has refused to guarantee Eddie Jones won’t be sacked before next year’s World Cup in Japan.

And that’s despite the Australian coach getting a vote of confidence last week from RFU chief executive Steve Brown.

England ended a five-Test losing run with their first-ever Test win over South Africa at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday, but lost the series 2-1. When asked if

from PETE SAMSON Jones will still be in charge for the World Cup, Cosslett said: “You’re asking for unconditional support but only my children get that. And even then not always.

“It’s not something you give because you’re under assessment the whole time. It’s just what we do.

“Eddie has earned the right to make a strong case for the way ahead.

“It will be fascinating to hear what he’s got to say.” Jones admitted: “We have had some tough losses and some losses where we have handled big moments poorly, but we also go home as the first England side ever to win at Newlands, which is a massive achievement.”

They sealed a 25-10 win with a late Jonny May try from Danny Cipriani’s inch-perfect through kick.

And man-of-the match May said: “Those last 20 minutes felt like the England we are used to playing for.” SWEATING: Eddie Jones
