SWEDEN hero Ludwig Augustinsson was in dreamland as his side thumped Mexico to top the group.

More extraordinary, both teams qualified and Germany finished bottom.

Left-back Augustinsson scored his first international goal when he charged upfield in the 50th minute and angled home a left-foot volley.

Twelve minutes later, Sweden skipper Andreas Granqvist, amid deafening boos and whistles from the Mexico fans, blasted home a penalty after Hector Moreno had brought down Marcus Berg. There was no way back for Mexico when Edson Alvarez scored a tame own goal after 74 minutes. But Mexico’s heartbreak only lasted until they found out they had qualified thanks to South Korea’s defeat of Germany.

Augustinsson said: “This is something I dreamed of. The insane thing is, I really had this feeling that I would score at the World Cup.”

Granqvist said: “What a performance. It could have been 5-0 or 6-0. First in the group? Not many who would have thought that.”

But Granqvist insisted Germany’s elimination did not fill him with joy, adding: “Not in a million years. I don’t work that way.” Sweden coach Janne Andersson said: “I’m so incredibly proud by how we performed in the match. They were so disciplined.”

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio was more “hurt” by his team’s defending than he was overjoyed by qualifying.

He said: “We qualified because we beat Germany and Korea but nevertheless I am very hurt.

“Usually we play three at the back with a midfielder in front to protect.

“Today I decided to play four and we allowed them to score three goals, which is too many.

“My feelings in the last few minutes, my feelings in general, were that I wasn’t too happy with the way we defended at all.”
