COSTA RICA got a bizarre consolation as Switzerland set up a last-16 showdown with Sweden.

The team that stunned the World Cup in Brazil four years ago, by topping a group that contained England, Italy and Uruguay, finished bottom this time.

But at least they head home with a point and having found the back of the net, even if it must go down as an own goal by Swiss keeper Yann Sommer.

Having seen one penalty appeal chalked off by VAR, Bryan Ruiz stepped up to take a spot-kick moments later after Joel Campbell was felled.

The former Fulham ace saw his penalty cannon off the underside of the bar before bouncing off Sommer’s head to seal a stoppage-time leveller.

Costa Rica started like a team determined not to head home emptyhanded. But it was the Swiss who took the lead on the half-hour, Blerim Dzemaili smashing in from six yards.

Costa Rica were back on level terms in the 56th minute when Kendall Waston grabbed his country’s first goal of the tournament with a well-timed header.

The equaliser stirred the Swiss from their slumber, substitute Josip Drmic heading against the frame of the goal.

Switzerland retook the lead with a little more than two minutes remaining when Drmic tucked away a first-time low drive.

And Ruiz was then denied the chance to end his international career with a goal as his spot-kick flew in off Sommer’s bonce.
