ANDY’S BIG CALL

Doubt over Wimbledon

- By DAVID WOODS

ANDY MURRAY will decide today whether he will play at Wimbledon.

The former world No.1 said he did not want to just make up the numbers.

Murray returned to action last week after nearly a year out with a hip injury and yesterday he lost 6-4 6-4 to fellow Brit Kyle Edmund at the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne.

He plans to make up his mind on whether to go for a third Wimbledon title prior to the draw at 10am tomorrow.

“There is no risk in me playing tennis right now,” he said.

“It is whether I feel I am able to do myself justice. Two weeks ago I practised with Kyle and I didn’t win a game.

“I have made decent improvements but I don’t just want to go there and just play. I want to compete properly and if I don’t feel like I can do that, I won’t play.”

Edmund admitted it felt strange claiming his first victory, at the third attempt, over his idol. “That is sport – it happens, you have to be selfish and win,” said Edmund. “He probably had the same thing after beating Tim Henman for the first time.”

Cameron Norrie won the other Battle of the Brits, beating his Wimbledon doubles partner Jay Clarke.

After the 6-4 6-3 defeat, Clarke revealed he had been suffering racial abuse on social media, particularly after defeats.

“It has happened every time I have played this year – and for the last two or three years,” said Clarke. “So it is almost normal now.

“The first time it happened I was quite taken aback, but now you almost expect it.”

British women’s No.1 Johanna Konta fell to top seed Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 6-1 6-4. SEVEN-TIME champion Serena Williams has been seeded for Wimbledon. The 36-year-old American’s ranking has tumbled since she took time off to have her daughter. But officials have used tournament rules to make her the 25th seed.
