MIKE WARD’S SMALL SCREEN
GLOW: SEASON 2 (18) (Netflix Original) THEY’RE minor celebrities now but the Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling, back today on Netflix with 10 fabulous new episodes, sure as hell won’t let this go to their heads.
Their director Sam (Marc Maron) very swiftly sees to that, ruthlessly laying down the law to assert his authority as soon as grapplers such as Ruth and Debbie (Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin) have the audacity to suggest ideas of their own for “his” show.
As before, GLOW is a comedy-drama with mid-80s gender politics very much at its heart, but first and foremost it’s tremendous entertainment, with funny, punchy storylines that rattle along and a ragtag bunch of characters I defy you not to warm to.
Top that all off with a fine 80s soundtrack and it’s no wonder millions love this show.
GAME NIGHT (15) (Download now, DVD and Blu-ray from Monday) THIS excellent dark comedy stars Rachel McAdams and
Jason Bateman as Annie and Max, a competitive couple who look forward to their weekly game night with pals.
It also features Kyle Chandler as Brooks, Max’s older brother – a wealthier, more successful, way more annoying individual who significantly ups the ante when he rolls into town – by staging an elaborate murder mystery party.
When Brooks is kidnapped, the players realise just how dramatic this game of his has become. But by this point, is it actually still a game? LADY BIRD (15) (Download now, DVD and Blu-ray from Monday) SAOIRSE Ronan earned an Oscar nomination for her hilarious performance here as Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson.
This ballsy Californian teenager is forever at loggerheads with her mother (Laurie Metcalf, also Oscar nominated) – perhaps because they’re uncannily alike.
YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE (15) (Download, DVD and Blu-ray from Monday)
RUTHLESS mercenary Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) gets hired to rescue a politician’s daughter from the clutches of a sex ring.
He has no idea of the horrors awaiting him.
