the boys have shown great character.”

Maguire believes Tuesday’s penalty shoot-out win against Colombia has answered those who doubted Gareth Southgate’s inexperienced squad could handle the pressure.

“There were a lot of questions about us,” said the Leicester star.

“Obviously in the 93rd minute of a game we are fully in control and feel really comfortable, so for them to score on a set play is something that we will look at, try and improve on.

“But to come back and show great character, it’s really promising.

“And to win on penalties, something we haven’t done in so many years, we know it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Maguire says the Three Lions will go into their clash with the Swedes with sky-high confidence.

“It’s given us great belief, great confidence in the squad.” he said.

“Obviously we made it hard work for ourselves, maybe we could have killed the game off.

“But winning on penalties is really big.

“You’ve seen over the past few years we have lost penalty shoot-outs in knockout games so this has changed that.

“We can take that confidence into the next game.”

DUTCHMAN Bjorn Kuipers will referee Saturday’s clash against Sweden. Kuipers was in charge when England lost their opening match of the 2014 World Cup 2-1 to Italy in Brazil.
