I’VE GOT A DEAL
May’s win on Brexit
THERESA May last night said her Cabinet had reached an agreement on the proposals Britain will take to Brexit talks with the EU.
The PM’s announcement followed marathon talks at Chequers with ministers and senior officials.
Mrs May said: “Today in detailed discussions the Cabinet has agreed our collective position for the future of our negotiations with the EU.
“Our proposal will create a UK-EU free trade area which establishes a common rule book for industrial goods and agricultural products. This maintains high standards in these areas, but we will also ensure no new changes in the future take place without the approval of Parliament.
“As a result, we avoid friction in terms of trade, which protects jobs and livelihoods, as well as meeting our commitments in Northern Ireland.
“We have also agreed a new business-friendly customs model with freedom to strike new trade deals around the world.
“Next week we will be publishing a White Paper which will set out more details of how we will be taking back control of our money, laws and borders.”
Meanwhile, plans for a “no deal’ Brexit will be stepped up in case Brussels rejects moves that split the single market.
Ministers were stripped of their phones during the high-stakes summit at the PM’s country residence.
The PM insisted the Cabinet had a “duty” to agree on a way forward, and warned ministers they may be replaced by a “talented new generation” if they quit.
Potential rebels were even told they would immediately lose ministerial cars if they resigned, and were told how to get a taxi home.
Supporters said the PM’s plan was “for good reasons” such as stopping items being held up at borders.
