Kane, set ’n match

SERENA AN ENGLAND FAN

- By HECTOR NUNNS

SERENA WILLIAMS has turned into an England fan after catching World Cup fever.

The American, 36, swept past Evgeniya Rodina 6-2 6-2 in 62 minutes in pursuit of her 24th Grand Slam title and then revealed her love for Harry Kane and Co. Williams, who faces Italian Camila Giorgi in the quarter-finals, said: “It’s the atmosphere, seeing all the English just get so excited. You can’t help but root for the team.

“What a game that last one was, those goals were just incredible. They were playing so aggressive. “I have just been enjoying it, it is so fun to watch. The World Cup is a special time of the year. I get almost depressed thinking only two more matches, then one more. “What is going to happen to my life after that? I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m going to be a little bit low.” Dominika Cibulkova also stormed into the last eight but then branded Wimbledon officials “ridiculous”. The fiery Slovakian, 29, beat Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4 6-1 to set up a clash with Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.

But an ill-tempered flashpoint in the first set led to an eight-minute delay as supervisor Melanie Tabb was called on to court twice.

Cibulkova successfully challenged a call of ‘out’ to give her three set points but Su-Wei was furious the point was not replayed having returned the ball.

And though the Chinese Taipei player was correct, Cibulkova was livid that Chinese umpire Juan Zhang reversed the decision.

She said: “I don’t want to talk about it because I would get really upset and angry.

“It was ridiculous, what happened. Just because a player is complaining.

“It never happened to me, that the umpire changed the decision, when I complain.

“It was a really bad decision from the supervisor and from the umpire.

“The umpire told me she didn’t remember what happened. Is that my fault?”

Cibulkova started Wimbledon angry after being booted out of the seeds to accommodate seven-time winner Serena.
