Extra-time agony as brave Lions crash out
ENGLAND’S glorious World Cup run came to an agonising end last night.
Gareth Southgate’s braves fell to a painful extra-time defeat in the Luzhniki Stadium.
They held the lead for more than an hour after scoring in the fifth minute, thanks to Kieran Trippier’s superb free-kick – but finally ran out of steam.
Ivan Perisic equalised midway from JEREMY CROSS in Moscow
through the second half when he got to a cross ahead of Kyle Walker.
And Mario Mandzukic reacted quickest to grab the winner in the 109th minute.
It brought to an end a memorable campaign that restored the country’s faith in the Three Lions.
And it surely heralds the beginning of a bright future under an outstanding coach.
