IT’S DARN ’N DUSTED
Mac puts Giants on brink
WINGER Darnell McIntosh touched down in each half to leave Huddersfield one win away from the end of season Super 8’s.
Victory for Simon Woolford’s impressive side also ended a run of 11 successive defeats against their visitors, dating back to May 2014.
And but for talisman half-back Danny Brough missing all four conversion efforts, Huddersfield’s winning margin would have been greater.
They shrugged off Sam Tomkins’ 199th career try after six minutes to lead 12-6 at half-time.
Catalans-bound Tomkins also blotted his copybook with a high tackle that forced off England winger Jerry McGillvary for a concussion check.
But it was Wigan who were left reeling as McIntosh climbed highest to reach Lee Gaskell’s angled cross field kick for Giants’ first try after 12 minutes.
Giants were second bottom when a 48-0 defeat at the DW Stadium last March signalled the end of Rick Stone’s reign as Huddersfield boss.
Interim coach Chris Thorman and then Australian Woolford have masterminded a revival since then.
They were certainly good value for their interval advantage against opponents who handed a debut to giant teenage forward, Samy Kibula.
Giants increased their victory chances with McIntosh’s second try two minutes after the re-start but Brough made it a hat-trick of misses from the tee to keep Wigan interested.
They crossed for a fourth time with Michael Lawrence on the sidelines for his professional foul.
England centre Leroy Cudjoe was quickest to react as Brough prodded a grubber kick towards the line.
Tom Davies finally added further points for the Warriors five minutes from time but Giants survived and need only one more win for a top-eight finish.
