TRUMP THE EGO HAS LANDED

‘Brits love me’:

- by OLIVER PRITCHARD oliver.pritchard@dailystar.co.uk

DONALD Trump swept into Britain yesterday insisting we all love him – despite at least 70,000 people preparing mass protests.

The US President and First Lady Melania stepped off Air Force One at Stansted Airport, Essex, after insisting Brits “like me a lot” – because of his views on migrants and Brexit.

He is to have tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle and be schmoozed by the Prime Minister as part of the four-day working visit.

But even before he arrived, the controversy began as he expressed his views on the British people.

He said after a turbulent Nato summit in Brussels: “I think they like me a lot in the UK. They agree with me on immigration. I think that’s why Brexit happened.”

And he made a dig that Theresa May’s “soft” Brexit plan is not exactly what the British people want.

He said: “Brexit is Brexit, the people voted to break it up so I would imagine that is what they’ll do, but they might take a different route.”

The Trumps flew by helicopter last night to Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill.

He and Melania – who dazzled in a yellow floor-length gown – were guests of honour at a lavish dinner hosted by the Prime Minister.

The event, attended by business leaders, was to press Britain’s case for a trade deal with the US after Brexit. Mrs May told him: “Sir Winston Churchill once said that ‘to have the United States at our side was, to me, the greatest joy’.

“The spirit of friendship and cooperation between our countries, our leaders and our people, that most special of relationships, has a long and proud history.

“Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future.”

Outside the 18th century palace near Woodstock, Oxon, anti-Trump campaigners gathered and more protests are due today, including a “Stop Trump” march in London.

Some 10,000 police officers have been drafted in to create a “ring of steel” around the visitors, the largest mobilisation for seven years at a cost of millions. But sleeping conditions for the officers – on rows of camp beds in a gymnasium – have been described as a disgrace.

Mr Trump will head to Scotland for the weekend before meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Helsinki.
