We’ve got it Alt-together

READY TO ROCK

-

ALT-J are thrilled to be headlining Latitude this weekend.

But they didn’t think they were ready when they first topped the bill in 2015.

The trio close the festival on Sunday, after sets from Solange and The Killers.

Keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton told me: “We feel like we have more of a right to be headliners.

“The first time, we felt, ‘Christ, this is early in our career!’ It was a great night but we were too grateful. This year, we’re more confident and we actually feel like headliners.” Three years ago Alt-J played at the same time as Ed Sheeran did a late-night secret set at one of Latitude’s smallest stages.

Gus recalled: “Ed came to our dressing room to say hi and tell us he was doing his show.

“That was quite exciting. I told my 18-year-old cousin before Ed announced his set publicly, and she was very grateful to me as she was able to get down the front.”

Latitude comes a year after Alt-J released their third album Relaxer and Gus revealed the band have begun to discuss new songs. He said: “We’re always working on ideas which we squirrel away.

“I don’t know when it’ll be, but when it comes time to make the next album we’ll open up the song fridge and see what we’ve got in the Tupperware.

“I’m getting married next May, and I can say we definitely won’t be releasing anything then.”

Gus opened up a café called Dandy near his east London home, which has since closed but he said: “I’d definitely do it again.”
