BRITAIN is under siege from an army of invading insects. And the UK’s top bug expert says the heatwave is causing an explosion of creepy crawlies – many of them deadly!
Yesterday we told how a lad aged four was hospitalised after being stung by a caterpillar in Plymouth, developing a swollen face and being violently sick.
Dr James Logan, head professor and scientist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as well as a leading expert of Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies show, blames the hot weather.
He says: “With the heatwave we all spend a lot more time outdoors well into the evening.
It’s especially the evening time that they decide to come out and bite.
“If the hot weather continues, year-on-year we will see a lot more of the consequences. As the warm climate continues they will survive longer as they breed much faster.
“A colder spell would normally wipe some out, but that’s just not happening right now, especially as the winters get warmer too. So these bugs are becoming a threat potentially all year round. It’s genuinely something. As scientists, we are looking out for them in the UK as the climate is changing so much that we will begin to see diseases break out here.”
Dr Logan tells JENNIFER DUNKERLEY about the UK’s most fearsome offenders you will have to watch out for this summer...
