BORIS: FIX BREXIT TEZ

PM can still save it

- By ALEXANDER BROWN alex.brown@dailystar.co.uk

BORIS Johnson last night blamed Theresa May for her “fog of self-doubt” and insisted it is “not too late to save Brexit”.

The former Foreign Secretary claimed the Prime Minister had allowed “dithering” to ruin her plans, leaving a white paper that was “Brexit in name only”.

He demanded she tear up her “miserable” plans and return to the “glorious vision” of a global Britain.

In the damning resignation speech, a defiant Mr Johnson told the House of Commons: “It is not too late to save Brexit.”

Last night some critics said it was the usually comical politician’s first speech without jokes, leading to claims he is getting serious about a leadership bid.

Mr Johnson said: “We must try now, because we will not have another chance to get this right.

“Let’s explicitly aim once again for the glorious vision of Lancaster House.

“A strong, independent, self-governing Britain that is genuinely open to the world, not the miserable permanent limbo of Chequers.”

In a withering speech that further puts Mrs May’s premiership at risk, the Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP also blasted her strategy.

He said: “We agreed to hand over a £40billion exit fee, with no discussion of our future economic relationship.

“We accepted the jurisdiction of the European Court over key aspects of the withdrawal agreement.

“And, worst of all, we allowed the question of the Northern Irish border, which had hitherto been assumed on all sides to be readily soluble, to become so politically charged as to dominate the debate.”

He demanded Britain break fully from the EU, and become “great independent actors” on the world stage.

He added: “That was the vision of Brexit that we fought for.”

Despite resigning over her policy, he insisted Mrs May could still save Brexit.

He said: “If the Prime Minister can fix that vision once again before us, then I believe she can deliver a great Brexit for Britain.”
