Move to Prem rivals KO’d

ANTHONY MARTIAL won’t be joining Chelsea or Tottenham – even if they are prepared to pay more than £70m for him.

Disillusioned Martial has been told he can leave Manchester United, but only for the right club and the right price.

And United are adamant the French striker won’t be joining a Premier League rival. Having been ready to hand Martial a final chance to impress him, boss Jose Mourinho has reluctantly accepted his desire to leave after three years at Old Trafford. Mourinho knows there is no value in keeping an unhappy player, although United will ensure Martial only leaves on their terms.

Mourinho has told executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that selling Martial is now the right move, giving them time to bring in a replacement before the August 9 transfer deadline. The Portuguese coach (left)

tried to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan last summer and could resurrect his interest on the back of the Croatia winger’s impressive displays for the World Cup runners-up in Russia. Martial, 22, has also interested Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, with United

from DAVID McDONNELL in LA now willing to negotiate with both clubs. United paid Monaco £36m for Martial on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2015, with that figure rising to £58m with add-ons, which is why they want at least £70m.

Despite his indifferent form last season and his failure to hold down a regular place under Mourinho, United know Martial’s age and profile means they can command a big fee.

The forward failed to make France’s World Cup-winning squad and blamed his omission on his lack of game time under Mourinho.

Martial rejected the offer of a new contract as he enters the final year of his current deal, with United holding an option to extend it by a further 12 months.

After United’s goalless draw with San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, Mourinho has warned Martial he cannot dictate the terms of his own exit.

“I would like to be in Los Angeles and I am in San Jose,” said Mourinho. “You can’t do whatever you want in life. I would love to arrive in LA, to train in LA and play all my five matches in LA, and then don’t travel, don’t change hotel and go back to Manchester.”

Martial played the full 90 minutes in United’s draw and is expected to keep his place for tomorrow’s clash with AC Milan in LA.
