AMAZING HEATWAVE ADVICE TAKE THE WEEK OFF!

Met Office: Stay indoors until Friday to beat 38C blast

- by ANTONY THROWER

HEATWAVE Brits have been warned to keep out of the sun all week as sizzling temperatures climb towards 38C.

We should all stay indoors between 11am and 3pm every day until Friday with the windows shut and curtains closed, say the Met Office.

Their advice came yesterday, the hottest day so far of the record-breaking summer.

ROASTING Brits have been warned to stay out of the sun until Friday as scorching temperatures hit record levels.

Met Office chiefs urged people to stay indoors between 11am and 3pm every day until the end of the working week.

They ordered a “Level Three heatwave action” which urges sun-lovers to stay cool, shut all windows and close the curtains.

And families have been ordered to check on any frail neighbours in case the expected 38C (100.4F) heat takes its toll. The heavy-handed advice came as Britain sweltered in the hottest day of the year yesterday.

Thermometers hit 33.3C

(91.9F) in Santon Downham, Suffolk.

The Met Office’s warning said: “Stay out of the sun.

“Keep your home as cool as possible – shading windows and shutting them during the day may help.

“There is a 90% probability of heatwave conditions between 0900 on Monday and 0900 on Friday in parts of England.

“Open them when it is cooler at night. Keep drinking fluids.

“If there’s anybody you know, for example an older person living on their own, who might be at special risk, make sure they know what to do.”

Brits greeted the “stay indoors” advice with a barrage of sarcastic tweets.

John Barrett said: “Brilliant advice from the Met Office saying stay indoors and out of the sun till Friday. OK I’ll just call my boss and tell him I won’t be in this week. Sure he’ll understand.”

Another Twitter user, from West Sussex, ranted: “Are you kidding me...? The majority of the year we have grey and miserable weather and are stuck indoors. Make the most of it I say!”

And Chris Nunn added: “Welcome to soft Britain!”

Coastguards also urged holidaymakers to take care during the heatwave after two girls were swept out to sea.

The pair, aged 19 and seven, were caught in a riptide at Sea Palling, Norfolk.

They were both rescued – but officials do not want a repeat of the emergency.

A spokesman for the Coastguard said: “Warning flags are there for a reason – to stop people swimming in dangerous areas where there might be riptides and undercurrents waiting to sweep you away.

“The weather might be boiling, and everyone wants to get in the water to cool off, but don’t pay with your life.”

Meanwhile, a man died after being pulled from a river. The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was spotted in the River Foss in York.

He was taken to hospital where he died.
