Dettori ban is reduced
FRANKIE DETTORI had his appeal against a 10-day riding ban dismissed yesterday.
However, he had his ban cut to six days but will still miss out on some top rides over the next week.
The Italian, below, was found guilty of careless riding at Newmarket on July 13 when his mount Angel’s Hideaway shifted right and caused interference to both Main Edition and La Pelosa.
He was banned from July 27 to August 5 inclusive, which ruled him out of this Saturday’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, as well as the mounts on Stradivarius in Tuesday’s Goodwood Cup and Without Parole in Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes.
Dettori contested that decision and, though that was thrown out, the appeal board did opt to reduce the ban to six days.
That will allow Dettori to return next Thursday, in time for the Qatar Nassau Stakes which is the Group One feature of the day. Dettori left the hearing without saying anything and his barrister, Graeme McPherson offered no comment regarding the jockey’s ban but said his client had left in a hurry as he was late for a lunch appointment with his wife. “The basis of our finding is he didn’t take corrective action quickly enough,” said BHA panel chairman David Fish. “We take the view he had sufficient time to take preventative action before he actually did. “We take the view considerable interference was caused to two horses in particular the ones ridden by Mr Doyle and Mr Buick.
“We take into account the period over which this careless riding occurred.”
Trainer John Gosden described Angel’s Hideaway as a “very nervous filly” who had actually got loose on the gallops on Monday morning.
