time together.” Guardiola plotted City’s recordbreaking title triumph last season but said his reign at the Etihad is also dependent on him winning more trophies.

He said: “When we decided to extend the contract, first of all I am comfortable and secondly, the club trust what we are doing.

“Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano know it depends on results.

“We have three more years contract, but the results will dictate what will happen in the future.”

Liverpool issued a summer statement of intent by splashing out close to £175m on new players, including a world record £65m fee for keeper Alisson.

Guardiola says the Reds are reacting to the high standards set by City.

He said: “Liverpool believe they need these kind of players because it is best for them. I’m not going to judge what the others do.

Perfect

“I don’t like it when my colleagues speak about me or my players. So I’m not going to say anything.

“If they believe it is the best for them, it’s perfect for them.

“What we have done last season, we increased the levels of the Premier League to 100 points.

“The level was here, now it’s up here. We try to take the level higher and every team tries to do better and better.”

The pressure is now on Liverpool to show they can challenge City and Guardiola expects them to be contenders.

He added: “They are contenders to win the title. We are one also, and Liverpool are a contender.

“My two seasons here, we were contenders in one of them, and in the future, Liverpool with the history they have, they will be a contender to win the Premier League.

“Man United will be stronger and Liverpool and Chelsea and Tottenham and some of the others,

“Everton have appointed a good manager. West Ham, Manuel Pellegrini has come back and bought a lot of players. Always in the beginning, the expectation of every team is high.

“We just want to continue what we started two seasons ago.”

But Guardiola stressed City would not match their exploits from last season.

He added: “We’re not going to break any more records in the Premier League. It’s impossible, almost impossible.”
