A HONEYMOON bride was devastated last night after her new husband died in the raging Greek wildfires.

Zoe Holohan last saw Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp as they ran for their lives from the inferno that killed at least 80. She had been praying he would be found alive.

But last night, the two families said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our family member, Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp. “The families would respectfully appreciate privacy at this time as we grieve and as Zoe makes her recovery. Funeral arrangement will be announced at a later stage.”

The Irish pair only married last Thursday and flew out to Greece on Saturday. They became separated in the panic as the wildfires raged “like a blowtorch” through seaside resort Mati, 18 miles from the capital Athens, on Monday night.

The couple are believed to have abandoned their car and fled towards the sea in a desperate bid to survive.

Zoe, who works in a newspaper advertising department in Dublin, suffered non life-threatening burns to her head and hand but Brian went missing in the inferno that claimed at least 80 lives.

Brian worked in finance for a Dublin catering firm and also volunteered for Blood Bikes East, which provides an emergency medical transport service around hospitals in the city.

The death toll in Greece is expected to rise as charred houses and vehicles are searched. Police are questioning four locals on suspicion of arson.
