WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

- MIKE WARD

TECHNOLOGY should always be our slave, not our master. Who was it who said that? It was me, just now. Good line, huh?

And there are some inspiring examples of the point I’m rather pompously trying to make – that science works best when it improves our current lives, rather than forcing us to adopt new ones – in INVENTING THE IMPOSSIBLE: THE BIG LIFE FIX, back tonight on BBC2 (8pm).

What happens in this show, if you’ve not seen it before – or even if you have – is that inventors, designers, computer programmers and other respected boffins dream up ideas to help people overcome disabilities, health problems etc. and lead the lives they want.

One of the people they hope to help is Graham, once a hugely keen snowboarder but now relying on a wheelchair to get around, an accident having left him with severe disabilities. Graham doesn’t just want to get back on the slopes – he wants to be able to stay upright again and control his board without assistance. EVEN though KEEPING FAITH (9pm, BBC1) is a cut above the norm, you’ll notice it’s still following one golden rule of TV drama. Namely, that if the show we’re watching is a cop show, those cops will ultimately prove super-sharp, correctly identifying the culprit before too long. Whereas if it’s a show that just happens to have cops among its various other characters, as is the case here, they’ll always be incompetent numpties, wasting precious time by harassing the blatantly innocent, as they’re surely doing by grilling Faith (Eve Myles) over her hubby’s disappearance.
