MY in-laws were so excited when we announced that I was pregnant with twins.

For the first few weeks after the birth they visited with clothes and gifts, but now they don’t want to know.

They’re not interested in baby-sitting or helping out. In fact, they’ve just rented a cottage in Cornwall that they’re planning to spend the whole summer at.

Then, in October, they’re going to Australia for six months.

Don’t you think that’s sneaky and selfish? They like the bragging rights that come with being grandparents, and the occasional family party, but they are not interested in pulling their fingers out when it really matters.

JANE SAYS: Disappointing as this is for you, I suppose you must accept that your in-laws have their own lives to lead.

Looking after other people’s children isn’t for everyone.

Maybe your in-laws find the responsibility of twins too much; or they simply aren’t interested in getting their hands dirty.

If they’ve worked hard their whole lives bringing up their own children, then no-one could blame them for craving travel and new experiences now.

Don’t be tempted to fall out with them, because you don’t know what’s around the corner. Work with your husband on your child care options and put your in-laws to the back of your mind.
