MIKE WARD’S SMALL SCREEN
JOURNEYMAN (15) (Download, DVD and Blu-ray from Monday) PADDY Considine puts in a truly heart-rending performance here as Matty Burton, a much-loved middleweight boxing champion who sets out to defend his title one last time – unaware he is about to face his biggest fight outside the ring.
Jodie Whittaker is equally compelling as Emma, his devoted wife and mum to their baby daughter Mia, who’s set to face that battle alongside him.
Matty’s title defence, against ultra-cocky challenger Andre Bryte (Anthony Welsh), does indeed end in the victory he’s predicted, but it’s a brutal slog that’s taken a far greater toll than initially apparent, and when he suddenly collapses later at home, it’s clear something’s very wrong indeed.
The Matty who returns from hospital following emergency surgery is a helpless, shuffling shell of a man, his personality altered and memory shot to ribbons.
