STAR NEIL’S FOOTIE GAFFE

AMERICAN actor Neil Patrick Harris has been trolled after turning up to see Man City in their kit – before cheering for rivals Man United.

The How I Met Your Mother comedy star took his family to watch their first ever football match when the Sky Blues faced Liverpool at New Jersey’s MetLife stadium.

But an online clip shows him dropping the ball as he chanted: “Go Manchester United!”

Neil, 45, famous for his role as Barney in the hit US sitcom, was at the pre-season clash with his son Gideon.

He said on an Instagram video: “At the MetLife Stadium for our first football slash soccer game.”

The American then shouts: “Go Manchester United.” Social media pranksters were quick to hammer the dad-of-two for his blunder. One user joked: “Funnier than every episode of How I Met Your Mother combined.”

Another quipped: “Not long before he’s at Goodison in an Everton shirt screaming ‘go Liverpool’.”

But some saw Neil’s gaffe as an example of how Americans know “nothing” about our “soccer”.

Liverpool won the game 2-1 thanks to a stoppage time penalty from Sadio Mane.

The Reds and their rivals are two of a string of top clubs honing their fitness in the US for the new Premier League season.

The money-spinning tours are a nice little earner for big European teams while increasing the profile of the sport Stateside.
