You’ll get hooked this month

THIS weekend sees National Fishing Month cast off, with more than 250 events planned to introduce newcomers to the sport.

Every session includes free coaching and free rod licences for anyone wishing to try fishing for the first time, or to get back into angling after a break.

All participants will also be given a free goody bag from organisers, the Angling Trades Association.

It is the 26th year of NFM and a full list of planned events can be seen at www.nationalfishingmonth. com THE River Don barbel record has been beaten by a 13lb 11oz specimen.

It fell to the rod of Barczak Krzystof after he had prebaited the Yorkshire waterway to attract the fish into his chosen swim.

Following seven days of feeding 3FootTwitch Dubby Pellets, Barczak dropped into his peg and bagged a 13lb 5oz whiskers followed, just half an hour later, by the 13lb 11oz venue best. It eclipses the record by 1oz. THE biggest grass carp ever landed in Britain has fallen from the famous Yateley complex.

The immense 53lb 12oz fish was the reward for David Beagley, who was tackling Little Moulsham lake on the Surrey and Hampshire border.

There are believed to be around a dozen grassies in the nine-acre lake, but none will be able to claim a British record. It follows a decision by the British Record Fish Committee to declassify grass carp, labelling them a non-native species. WALTHAMSTOW’S No.1 Reservoir has switched on in the heatwave, with a monster haul of bream and carp falling to Phil Morton.

The big fish angler lured

29 double-figure bream to

14lb 12oz, and carp to 25lb, in a remarkable day’s sport.

The catch was triggered by a heavy baiting campaign, which saw the 39-yearold firefighter blaze his way through 65 kilos of bait, including hemp, crushed maize, maggots and pellets.
