The India captain also gave a hush signal and appeared to follow it up with an expletive as the fuse was lit on the opening day of the first Test at Edgbaston.

England lost six wickets in a disastrous final session as they crumbled from 216-3 to close on 285-9. Skipper Root was on 80 when he was called through by Jonny Bairstow for a second run he never looked like making.

TOTTENHAM boss Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing a £30m raid for Bournemout­h midfielder Lewis Cook.

Cook, 21, caught the eye of Pochettino after establishi­ng himself as a regular in Eddie Howe’s side last season.

Spurs have yet to make a summer signing but are ready to test Bournemout­h’s resolve to keep Cook.

Cook captained England to Under-20 World Cup glory last summer and was on standby for Gareth Southgate’s senior squad in Russia.

He is under contract until the summer of 2020 and the Cherries are keen to tie him to a new deal.

Boss Howe paid Leeds £7m to sign Cook as a teenager two years ago.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is also a big admirer of Cook, who played 33 games last season.

Cherries captain Simon Francis says it would take a big fee to prise Cook away from the south coast.

Francis said: “If clubs were in for Lewis Cook now, you would be looking at £20m or £30m.

“The manager did really well to sign him from Leeds at the right time for the right price.
