Brown out to forget KO

-

FUZZY memories of stumbling around the streets of Cardiff in his playing kit still bring Kev Brown out in a cold sweat.

The former England star had earlier been knocked out twice during the 2004 Challenge Cup final defeat to St Helens but was allowed to play on.

He was so confused that he then left the Millennium Stadium and wandered around the Welsh capital, missing the Wigan team bus back to the hotel.

Brown admits such a medical horror story would not happen nowadays.

The half-back, who is hoping to clinch another final appearance with Warrington on Sunday, said: “It was different in those days.

Worse

“I got knocked out twice but you didn’t get head assessments then and I played on but I can’t remember any of it.

“Afterwards I was walking around Cardiff in my kit in a daze. Fans were talking to me but I wasn’t all there so I’ve no idea what was said.

“I don’t know what was worse though – me walking around like that or team-mate Martin Aspinwall coming with me thinking we were getting on the drink.”

Brown got to his next final five years later with Huddersfield but suffered a major knee injury early in the game.

The Giants lost to Warrington and Brown was ruled out for the rest of that
