FRANK’S GOT US BUZZING

Nugent ready to lead Rams raid

- By DAVE ARMITAGE wkts. Notts won by nine runs. Sussex won by 12 runs.

DAVID NUGENT has a couple of things in common with his new gaffer at Derby.

Rams boss Frank Lampard has played for England and lifted the FA Cup just like Nugent. But there the similarity ends.

“Let’s put it this way, I don’t think anyone here will be asking him to put his medals on the table,” said the 33-year-old striker. “There wouldn’t be a table big enough.”

Nugent famously made just one England appearance as a sub for 24 minutes against Andorra, scored, and never pulled on the Three Lions shirt again.

Lampard retired with 106 caps to his name and won just about every honour in the game at Stamford Bridge, becoming Chelsea’s all-time top-scorer with 211 goals from midfield.

Lampard makes his managerial debut tonight at Reading as the Championship kicks off.

Nugent says it’s brilliant to have such a revered name in charge as they bid to shed their tag of being nearly men.

“He’s high profile – a massive name, so the spotlight will obviously be on us a bit more,” said Nugent.

“We want to show what we can do in the first game live on TV and show why we’re among the favourites.

“It’s an exciting time. You can feel that around the place. Especially having a new manager with his stature. He’s won the lot and has played in massive games.

“There’s a buzz around the training ground. When a new manager comes in you do get that buzz but when it’s someone like the gaffer with all that he’s done you can really feel it.

“We feel we can go one better than last time and get promotion. We hope so. We’re trying to play the right way. It’s exciting times.”

Nugent is desperate to sign off in style, adding: “I’ve only got a year left here so I want to just give my all for this team. The gaffer knows what I’m about. I’m a hard-working striker. If he puts his trust in me, I’ll give my all for him.” Asteras Tripoli Burnley (0) ...... 1 Hibernian (1) ................. 1 Aberdeen Rangers (0) ................ 1 Osijek (1) (1) ............ 1 ............ 1 (0) .................. 1 CRICKET
