CLUELESS ON WW1

Young adults don’t know when it was or who we fought

MORE than 40% of Millennials have no idea when World War One happened.

The shocking stat is the result of research ahead of this year’s 100th anniversary of the conflict’s end.

It found a quarter did not know it took place from 191418, rising to 44% for 18 to 24-year-olds. Almost a third

(27%) could not name any of Britain’s wartime allies, which included France, Russia, Italy and the USA.

Some even suggested Germany and Austria.

More than half could not name David Lloyd George as the Prime Minister who led Britain to victory.

Instead, more than a fifth suggested it was Sir Winston Churchill, who became PM in 1940.

The survey was on behalf of Ancestry.co.uk, which is offering a free access period for UK and Ireland military records on the site.

The website hopes this will encourage people to explore their ancestors’ war-time roles in the runup to the 100 years anniversary on November 11, 2018.

Russell James, Ancestry’s DNA and family his-

SACRIFICE: Trench hell tory expert, said: “This report suggests that many are in danger of forgetting the war’s significance.

“We hope that, by starting with the discovery of how grandparents and greatgrandparents were affected, people will be reminded of the facts of the Great War, and of remembering why we remember.”
