Brits grab golden double
DINA ASHER-SMITH and Zharnel Hughes sealed Britan’s first European Championship 100m sprint golden double in Berlin last night.
Hughes won in a championship record 9.95secs with fellow Brit Reece Prescod taking silver while CJ Ujah missed bronze by just 500th of a second.
Hughes’ ex-girlfriend AsherSmith romped home in 10.85secs – a new British record – 20 minutes earlier to become the first British woman to win the European crown since Dorothy Hyman in 1962.
Germany’s Gina Luckenkemper was second in 10.98, and Holland’s Dafne Schippers was third in 10.99,
from ALEX SPINK in Berlin
but they were looking at AsherSmith’s heels from 40 metres in.
Hughes said: “I am happy and the job is done. I felt a bit of cramp so I don’t think I could have gone any faster.
“Reece Prescod is a fast finisher so I knew I had to stay relaxed as he would challenge me. I’m happy that we came out victorious.”
Hughes was born and raised in the British Overseas Territory of Anguilla and he was hailed on Twitter by Usain Bolt, who he has trained with in Jamaica.
Sprint legend Bolt said: “Congrats to my @racerstrack teammate Zharnel Hughes.”
Prescod said: “It is good to have a British one-two. British sprinting is in a good place right now.
“We push each other hard and we run hard. I hope it continues in future Games.”
Asher-Smith is aiming for a golden hat-trick by defending her
200m title and helping to win the
4x100 sprint relay.
She said: “I am so happy. To run
10.8 seconds in the championships is a big deal.
“I did everything right. I was happy to nail it in the final, because there are so many talented people around me but you have to ignore that.
And looking towards the 2020 Olympics she warned: “I am hoping to do the same thing that I did today in Tokyo.”
