Storms set to lash the UK as heatwave washed away

BRITAIN faces a soaking from Storm Debby as torrential rain turns the weekend into a washout.

The heatwave will feel like a lifetime ago for families as the tail end of the US storm sweeps in from the Atlantic.

Forecasters said the south-west of England and Wales could see up to 50mm of rain.

Yesterday an inch of rain fell in only an hour.

Hail and powerful winds will hit large parts of the country over the weekend as the tail of the tropical storm blows across to Britain.

Storm Debby, which formed 1,200 miles east of Boston earlier this week, did not hit the US mainland.

But fierce winds reached 60mph, and it is still expected to bring weather chaos here. Temperatures in the south will remain in the low 20Cs, and in the north will stay in the high teens. Forecasters do not expect to see the scorching weather return anytime soon to the UK.

Becky Mitchell, from the Met Office, said: “The heaviest rain will arrive here Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“By Sunday we will see some heavy bursts.”

And the meteorologist continued: “The remnants of Storm Debby, merged with low pressure, will bring heavy rain and some strong winds.

“We aren’t forecasting high temperatures like those we have seen.”
