BRITAIN will soon be overrun with swarms of wasps as supplies of the only chemical used to kill them run out.

Numbers of the stinging insects have skyrocketed due to a mix of the heatwave and freezing winter.

And pest controllers across the country are scrambling around for the Ficam D powder used to kill the pests as supplies have fallen dangerously low.

Shane Jones, from Basingstoke-based pest control firm Ridtek said he has never seen such shortages.

He added: “2018 really is the year of the wasp. We’ve been flat-out busy for months, and all the other pest control guys have been too.

“Now we’ve been told that there simply isn’t any more Ficam D in the supply stores. I’ve got enough to last for a month, but I know of others who have just run out.

“This is the most crucial time of year for wasps – they’re starving and this is when they’re at their most aggressive.

“If you’ve got a wasp problem, pest controllers really are like the fourth emergency service.

“But if they can’t get the chemicals, then who are you gonna call?” To make matters worse wasps turn to human food in later summer as its usual diet of spit from larvae runs out.

The hard-to-find insecticide powder is made by chemical giant Beyer and treats 95% of nests across the UK.

Spokesman Dr Julian Little said: “We have had an unprecedented summer, where the hot weather has meant booming numbers of wasps, which has meant a high demand for Ficam D, and as a result we have run out.”
