Suspect held in hammer attack

-

TWO women were left fighting for life when they were bludgeoned with a hammer in the street.

Police last night arrested a suspect they earlier named as Joe Xuereb, 27, after the “horrific” attack in Greenwich, south-east London.

Detectives said the victims – a mother and daughter aged 64 and

30 – were not known to their alleged attacker and remain critically ill in hospital.

A man who called the ambulance after the alleged assault told how neighbours rushed to their aid to help with their devastating injuries.

Bob Gover, 69, said: “I went out there and I saw blood on the face of one of them and I knew something had happened so I ran inside and phoned an ambulance.

Blood

“One of them was moving at the time and sitting in an upright position with somebody holding her up, while the other one was laying down. They were both covered in blood.”

Mr Gover added that the younger woman’s partner was comforting her as they waited for the ambulance to arrive.

Another local, who asked not to be named, added the two women were not thought to be from the area and were just “walking through” when they were set upon.

Officers arrested Xuereb last night at an address in Sidcup, south-east London.

He was reported to have been spotted by a member of the public who followed him in her car.
