TV Adrian is warned: Stop or die

- By PETER DYKE peter.dyke@dailystar.co.uk

ADRIAN Chiles is cutting down his drinking after being warned by doctors he will end up dead.

He discovered in one week he drinks almost five times the limit recommended by doctors.

The TV presenter was making a documentary about Boozy Britain.

Chiles said: “I’ve had a concrete warning. I feel an idiot having drunk so much.”

In the BBC show called Drinkers Like Me, Chiles downs four pints before 11.30am.

He gets a shock when he works out he has more than 70 units of alcohol over seven days. Doctors recommend 14 units.

When he takes a blood test to see how healthy he is, he tries to joke about it saying: “My blood did look slightly the colour of Guinness. This is sobering news. I’ve got to keep an eye on myself.”

Later doctors discover he is overweight and has developed moderate fibrosis of the liver and also has liver fat. He is then warned it could lead to cirrhosis, liver failure and death. Chiles, who claims he drinks to “like himself more”, says: “This is depressing. If I no longer drink I don’t know what I will feel like.” The popular telly presenter claims things got worse for him while he was on Daybreak.

He told Radio Times: “Daybreak was unbelievably stressful.

“I knew if I had a pint or two everything would be fine, so I was self-medicating with alcohol.”

Now Chiles has cut down with non-drinking days and he reckons he drinks about twice the limit.

He adds: “I don’t do optimism but I can change my life to drink less. It’s amazing it had a quiet, vicelike grip on my life.”

¬ÊDrinkers Like Me airs Monday at 9pm on BBC Two. BROADCHURCH actress Olivia Colman has been named the most powerful person on British TV.

The 44-year-old star, set to play the Queen in Netflix hit The Crown, pipped Sir David Attenborough and Benedict Cumberbatch.

She tops the Radio Times’ TV 100 Power List ahead of the veteran presenter, who is number six on the list, and the Hollywood star, who is number nine.

Olivia, who first made a name for herself in a supporting role on Peep Show, has now been hailed as the queen of UK telly talent.

The star of top dramas such as The Night Manager and Broadchurch, she is replacing Claire Foy as the Queen in The Crown.

Olivia also beat incoming Doctor Who writer Chris Chibnall, This Country creators Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper, and Saturday Night Takeaway star Declan Donnelly and Luther actor Idris Elba.
