Thrashing shows we want more glory says Kompany

- By JEREMY CROSS

VINCENT KOMPANY insists Manchester City’s hunger for trophies is greater than ever.

The ominous warning to their title rivals comes in the wake of City’s 6-1 demolition of Huddersfield at the Etihad on Sunday.

Sergio Aguero plundered a hat-trick as Pep Guardiola’s men ran riot to charge to the top of the Premier League.

Guardiola could even afford to leave £250m worth of talent on the bench as the champions look to get into full stride from the off.

No side has defended the Premier League title since Manchester United managed it back in 2009.

Kompany admits the constant reminder of this fact is driving them to emulate what their neighbours did.

The Belgium defender insists there is no chance his side will let their standards drop and can see the hunger in the eyes of his team-mates that suggests they want to achieve even more.

He said: “I can only say it’s different from previous years to when we have won the league.

“Many players win the league for the first time and they come back and it’s something you have to feel, to see in their eyes if things have changed or not. I’m not saying we are going to do as well as we did last year.

‘‘But if the season is going to be different, it has to be because of the other teams being stronger, not us being weaker.

Compete

“I think everyone has been warned as well. No team in the last nine seasons has been able to repeat and win the league.

“We almost have to fight against ourselves and our nature, not to fall in the same trap as the other teams have done.

“But I can see that everyone is training hard – there’s so much competition in the team that we have to.

“If I can say one thing, it’s that you are never guaranteed to win the league, but if we can compete, then we will have done something that no other team has done for the last nine years.”

Kompany believes that City are in the middle of a special period and has praised the team’s professionalism for dismissing a Terriers side that held them to a goalless draw at the Etihad last season.

He added: “It feels great. It was a special week. The Amazon documentary came out and we were on the back of two big wins against two big teams.

“Huddersfield was a difficult team for us to face last season and it was a special week and we did extremely well.

“From the first minute to the last the team wanted to win and took this game seriously. I’m happy with that.”
