LET’S GET OLD OF A TROPHY

Kane wants team to come of age

- by TONY BANKS

HARRY KANE has warned Tottenham’s stars it is time to start winning trophies – because they are not getting any younger.

Spurs have not picked up any silverware since their League Cup win in 2008 but during four years under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership they have steadily improved.

Tottenham were league runners-up in

2017 and League Cup finalists in 2015, but honours have still evaded them.

No new signings this summer after a third-place finish in the Premier League last year might have indicated stagnation to some, but England captain Kane,

25, insists this team has bonded and every player trusts his team-mate.

The Spurs striker, who scored his firstever goal in August as his side brushed aside Fulham at Wembley on Saturday, said: “We’re a team that has made huge strides in a short amount of time and it’s about continuing that.

“The only way to do that is to start winning things. We’re not young anymore. We’re getting to an age where we are that bit more experienced – and we want to win.

“We want to win everything. Starting with two wins out of two is important.

“This team is reaching its peak now. It’s the fourth year the manager has been here and a lot of us have been here throughout that spell.

“When you have a team that knows each other for that long, you know how each other plays and how to keep everyone up for it and everyone honest.

“That’s what we’ve got. Hopefully we can continue that – playing hard, training hard. So far, so good.”

Calm

The lack of new signings and the delay in the opening of the new stadium prompted complaints from some fans.

But the opening-day win at Newcastle and Saturday’s 3-1 victory over the Cottagers suggest Pochettino’s team are on the right track.

Kane, whose side visit Manchester United on Monday, said: “Everyone just needs to be calm. As the boss said, the stadium is a huge project – it isn’t going to happen overnight.

“We wanted it to happen in a year, which would have been amazing, but it might be a little longer.

“With the transfer window, we’re not going to buy players for the sake of it. We’re only going to buy players to strengthen.

“We’ve got a great squad, we’ve kept a lot of our top players. We’ve been playing now for a few years together and that’s the understanding you need.

“When times get tough, you know you’ve got each other’s back. That’s what you need throughout a season.”
