ALCOHOL producers have rubbished a new study which claims there is no safe limit for boozing.

Scientists say going teetotal is the only way to avoid risking your health.

But industry group Alcohol Information Partnership has dismissed the claims , saying drinking sensibly is fine.

Previous research suggested booze levels of around one drink a day for women and two for men, may protect against heart disease.

A spokesman said: “In a week which has seen conflicting news reports about the health pros and cons of drinking, it’s hardly surprising that people are confused about whether and how much it’s safe for adults to drink.

“The truth is that the vast majority of people in the UK drink within the Chief Medical Officer’s low risk guidelines.”

The study, in The Lancet medical journal, pooled data from 592 studies with 28million participants. It suggested any alcohol benefits are outweighed by harms. It said having just one drink per day increased the risk of developing one of 23 alcohol-related health problems by 0.5%, compared with not drinking.

The Star Says: Page 6 ADRIAN Chiles has said he was “too good” at drinking to notice he had a problem.

The TV host, 51, said a doctor warned him he could not keep drinking 100 units a week. He was talking ahead of BBC Two show, Drinkers Like Me, which airs Monday. He said: “I was kind of too good at it.”
