GYLFI SIGURDSSON is ready to play in a number of roles to ensure he fits into Marco Silva’s Everton side.

The Toffees boss revealed the Iceland ace is happy to adapt to ensure that he impresses this season, as he is back playing with a smile on his face.

Sigurdsson (below) did not hit the heights expected in his first campaign at Goodison Park, following a record £45m move from Swansea in 2017.

But he showed signs last weekend, in the 2-1 win over Southampton, that he can kick on under new boss Silva.

The Toffees chief said: “I was clear with him like I was with all of them.

“We show them what we expect, what their role will be.

“I told him I believe in him and his quality and then it was up to him to prove his quality and that he deserved a role in the side.

“He is doing everything, trying and improving.

“Gylfi started pre-season later because he was in the

World Cup but he prepares his mind and body to play to high intensity.

“I don’t want to talk about his role last season, him or the other players. It’s not for me to talk about what happened to them last season, it is for me to talk about what Gylfi did since the World Cup and what he is doing now.”

Sigurdsson’s first season was played under Ronald Koeman, who was sacked in October, before Sam Allardyce took over. Now under Silva he will be given more freedom to play in the final third.

And despite the arrivals of Brazilian pair Richarlison and Bernard, Sigurdsson is an important player for the Portuguese manager.

Silva said: “I think it is possible he is enjoying it, because he told me, but I know he is ready to play in different positions as well.

“I have one idea what is possible in different positions when he can perform in a better way, when he feels better as well.

“He is ready to play in different positions, it is important and I know because he told me as well.”
