next month, said: “I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my team-mates, the manager and all of the supporters.

“Drink driving is completely unacceptable, I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set.”

Lloris, 31, was not at training yesterday ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But while there is no suggestion he faces the axe, Pochettino has a big decision over whether Lloris will continue to be skipper.

The White Hart Lane boss will delay any decision until after he has heard the Frenchman’s version of events today.

Lloris captained France to their World Cup win in Russia and is one of the most well-respected and experienced members of the Spurs squad and there was a sense of shock at the news yesterday.

If Lloris is found guilty he faces a hefty club fine – but losing the captaincy would be seen as a much bigger punishment.

The married father of two was not at a club event on the night in question.

He had apparently been dining out with Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny and Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud at an exclusive Mayfair restaurant before failing a roadside breathalyser.

Pochettino was only made aware of his arrest and charge shortly before his weekly pre-match press conference yesterday.

The news did not break until after he had finished speaking to the media, and he did not raise the issue himself.

A club spokesman said: “The Club takes matters such as this extremely seriously and it will be dealt with internally.”
