French whizz-kid is living the dream

- By DARREN WITCOOP

MATTEO GUENDOUZI claims he’s living the dream as a key cog in Unai Emery’s revolution at Arsenal.

The teenage French midfielder has been a surprise starter in all four games of Emery’s reign.

And the relative unknown who joined from Ligue 2 side Lorient has not let the Gunners down after emerging as an Emirates favourite.

Guendouzi, who is keeping £26m summer signing Lucas Torreira on the sidelines, says he has to pinch himself after being fasttracked into the side.

Guendouzi, 19, said: “It’s going very well – I’m living a daydream.

History

“Arsenal is the club of my heart, the one I have supported since I was little.

“I grew up watching, with my father, the videos of Vieira, Henry and the others, French players who made history.

“When I knew the club was interested to bring me, I did not hesitate.

“My integration was perfect thanks to the coach, the staff, the management, my team-mates, the supporters.

“I hope it will last a long time, that I will progress, make a great career and win trophies with this club.”

Arsenal have boasted no shortage of France internationals down the years, with Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit, Robert Pires and Thierry Henry lifting the World Cup in 1998.

Guendouzi has set his sights on following them and playing for the current world champions soon.

He added: “For now, I’m really focused on my goals with Arsenal.

“I won’t rush things and if they come, they come. But, inevitably, it’s a dream for me. I will do everything to get there someday.

“If I succeed, it would be extraordinary.”
