Greg’s gift for Gerro

- 1 1

VOLLEY GOOD: Docherty GREG DOCHERTY is under orders from Steven Gerrard to add goals to his game while he is on loan at Shrewsbury this season.

So scoring a brilliant volley with his first touch seconds after stepping off the bench is not a bad way to catch the Rangers manager’s eye.

The midfielder’s 73rdminute arrival was greeted with sarcastic cries of “Who?” from Fratton Park fans.

The answer came moments later when he drifted into the box, watched a poor Christian Burgess header drop out of the sky onto his right foot and guided the ball into the bottom corner.

Docherty, 21, said: “The manager said to me, ‘Go and get us a goal’. I was happy to contribute at that end of the pitch because it is something I want to add to my game.

“He (Gerrard) told me he wants me to get goals and add that to my game.

“It’s my first league goal and I hope it’s the first of many. I had a few options in Scotland but I always had it in my head to come down here to England and I’m relishing the challenge.”

Docherty was one of 16 new faces to arrive at Shrewsbury in a summer of ins and outs.

And Brett Pitman’s

87th-minute penalty equaliser denied Shrewsbury what would have been a fullydeserved first win.

Boss John Askey, appointed after winning the National League with Macclesfield last season, said: “It is difficult because before coming into the job I didn’t know the league so that is the hardest part.

“But now we have got the players in we are starting to gel a bit more.”

Portsmouth were fortunate to equalise after taking a bit of a first-half battering.

They are unlikely to be so lucky next week when they face free-scoring league leaders Peterborough in a mouthwatering top-two tussle.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett said: “Next week will obviously be a different game and a different type of game but similarly a game we are looking forward to.”
