Matt is still the Master

- By STEVE ACTESON

MATT FITZPATRICK became the first man since Seve Ballesteros in 1978 to win the Omega European Masters title two years running.

Then he admitted he had no beef with being left out of Thomas Bjorn’s Ryder Cup wildcard picks.

England’s Fitzpatrick,

24, claimed a play-off victory over Dane Lucas Bjerregaard in Switzerland.

And he backed captain Bjorn’s picks for this month’s showdown with the US in Paris.

Fitzpatrick said: “I didn’t play well enough this summer, it’s as simple as that.

“I don’t hold anything against Thomas for not picking me. I completely understand why he has gone for experience – it is vital in Ryder Cups.

“This is what I wanted to achieve this season, another win. To get it here is so special and to get my fifth is amazing.”

Fitzpatrick had to work hard in the Swiss Alps and had to birdie the final hole to force a play-off, despite going into the final round with a two-shot lead.

He then sank a 10-footer to birdie the 18th again in the play-off for his fifth European Tour victory. ¬ÊJUSTIN ROSE could become world No.1 today without hitting a shot.

Rose is one stroke clear in the BMW Championship at Aronimink, Pennsylvania, but yesterday’s final round was washed out.

They will try to complete it today but if the course is unplayable, the 54-hole result will stand and Rose will become the new world

No.1 with his victory.
