BODYGUARD fans were left reeling last night after Keeley Hawes’ character was killed off after just three episodes.

Home Secretary Julia Montague did not survive a deadly bomb blast triggered by a mystery murderer.

Her lover and personal protection officer was seen struggling to cope and threatening to kill himself after her death.

The shock twist left viewers baffled as to how the series will continue. Fans have been gripped by the political thriller starring Richard Madden as bitter ex-soldier David Budd.

Despite a string of romps with Hawes as Home Secretary, viewers have been left in the dark about whether the wounded serviceman wants to kill the politicians who sent troops to die in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And when the killer explosion was detonated last week some suspected that he might have had a hand in rigging the blast.

It is yet another of writer Jed Mercurio’s classic shock plot twists. The telly genius has form for killing off major characters.

His police series Line Of Duty has seen a slew of big names gruesomely dispatched.

Keeley herself died as he killed off her character Lindsay Denton in series three of the show.

The actress, 42, is a firm fan favourite and has left a big impression on Bodyguard viewers with some speculating that she had been hitting the gym to get in shape for the saucy shoot.

But she confessed that lugging around the heavy ministerial red box on the show was enough of a workout.

She said: “Somebody decided our version should be made of solid wood. I groaned as I picked it up and I swear my biceps grew bigger.”
