GOOGLE is turning the volume up to 11 with its new Max smart speaker.

The music machine was launched in the US late last year and, after months of waiting, it has gone on sale in the UK.

The Home Max can play music, turn on the lights and search the web via the power of your voice.

But where it excels against most of the competition is its sound quality.

With dual high-excursion woofers, the Max belts out music with an audio experience that’s loud, clear and booming with bass.

Google has also included something called Smart Sound which uses artificial intelligence to work the ultimate sound for your room. Those with Spotify, Deezer, YouTube Music or Google Play Music accounts can ask the Max to tune into their playlists or boom out any song and album from the millions available on these subscription platforms.

Google has also been pretty smart as the Max can act as a standard Bluetooth speaker which means Apple Music users can connect their iPhone and get the party started.

However, there is the downside of the price.

This device costs £399 which makes it £80 more expensive than Apple’s superb HomePod.

For that money you could even buy four Amazon Echos or treat yourself to a couple of Sonos One speakers.

There’s also an irritating swipe control strip on the top of the Max which can be infuriating to use.

VERDICT: The Home Max is a good-looking and great sounding smart speaker.

Offering 20 times the power of the standard Google Home there’s no question the Max will have your neighbours hearing every note.

Sadly, the £399 price tag just seems way too high.
