Queen Claire leads our winning roll call

THE Brits ruled supreme at the Emmy Awards in the US yesterday.

Claire Foy and Matthew Rhys were among those bagging coveted gongs at the prestigious do, winning lead actress and actor.

And Thandie Newton scooped best supporting actress in a drama series for her role on sci-fi western Westworld.

Claire, 32, was left dumbstruck when her name was announced for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

The award was well-timed for the star as she is set to hand over the role to Olivia Colman for the third series.

Dedicating her win to the incoming stars, she said on stage: “I had the most extraordinary two and a half years of my life – I’m not going to cry – on this programme.

“I was given a role I never thought I’d get the chance to play, and I met people who I will love forever and ever and ever, which makes me so, so proud.

“I dedicate this to the next cast, the next generation.”

The Brit winners came at the expense of much-fancied dystopian series The Handmaid’s Tale, with American ex-Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss among those losing out.

London-born Thandie fended off competition in a category packed with British stars, including Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown, Game Of Thrones’ Lena Headey and The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby.

But she turned the air blue during her acceptance speech.

She said: “I don’t even believe in God, but I’m going to thank her tonight.

“I am so f ****** blessed to work with the people I have gotten to work with.

“The cast and crew of Westworld, I love you all so much.”

Welshman Matthew, who plays Philip Jennings on The Americans, used his moment on stage to joke about proposing to girlfriend and co-star Keri Russell, as director Glenn Weiss
